Transforming a Static Website of a Not for Profit, to a Dynamic Website

WinVinaya Foundation is an NGO which works for the betterment of persons with disabilities (PwDs) by training them in niche skills and assisting them in getting a job. They had a website which was developed a few years back. It had static content, old info and none of the salient features that are expected in modern websites.

We decided to transform it to a Dynamic website which is elegant, has the latest info, caters to different stakeholders from students, to job seekers, to donors,to trainers and to corporates and be accessible to persons with disabilities.

1.   Creating Comprehensive Content

WinVinaya Foundation’s “Content Creation Team” provided us with 20+ pages of content along with images that were grouped under 9 main menu items and 16 sub-menu items

2.  Choosing Appropriate WordPress Theme

We chose Divi theme in WordPress which is elegant and has a lot of useful features to organize and present our content. To make the website versatile, each sub-menu was designed to use different plugins supported by the theme.

3.  Improving Performance

More plugins could leave you with performance challenges. So, to keep the performance we used various techniques. First we measured the loading time of different pages using the available online tools –GTMetrix and Google PageSpeed Insights. Once we got the numbers, we set a benchmark for the pages and started improving the load time by optimizing image size, transfer from server and more.

4.  Integrating Social Media

We integrated the webpage with social media handles including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.  This enabled the viewers to go to the social media pages from the website itself

5.  Accessible Widget for Persons with Disabilities

We added an accessible widget which makes it easier for Persons with Visual Impairment to navigate through the various pages

6.  Making website Secure

We plan to add payment gateways in the future and we made the website secured by moving to SSL

7.  Designed for frequent, dynamic updates to the website

The website was designed to be dynamic to cater to frequent and speedy updates which included Blogs, Monthly newsletters, information about various events conducted by WinVinaya Foundation

8.  Integration with Forms

We have included forms in the website for getting information from public and corporates who want to be part of our journey by sponsoring and volunteering and Candidate registration formto collect important information from the beneficiaries

9.  Metrics Collection through Google Analytics

The website was registered for Google Analytics metrics data collection which helps to team to finetune to content to make it more useful to the viewers

10.   Microsoft Power BI Integration with Auto Refresh

We built interactive Power BI dashboards with various filters and interesting visuals.  This was embedded into the website.  We enabled auto-refresh of data so that when the data changes in the backend, the website gets updated.

We ran this as a project following agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – with daily stand-ups, change control board and accessibility testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and launched it.

Due to proper planning, right collaboration, great skills, we were able to launch the website within a week.
